Weather in Italy

In contrast to the popular concept of the stereotypical Mediterranean climate, different parts of Italy have different types of climate. Turin, Milan and Bologna, located inland in the northern areas of Italy, have a continental climate, also classified as humid subtropical climate. Most of the peninsula towards the south of Florence and the coastal areas of Liguria has a Mediterranean type of climate. During the winter months, unlike the coastal areas of the peninsula, the higher altitudes and valleys that are often covered with snow become very wet and cold. Generally, the coastal regions have warm and dry summers, with mild winters; however, the lowland valleys become hot in summer.

When to Go

The best time to enjoy the climate of Italy is between April and June and from mid-September to October when the temperature during the day is around 70 degrees. It gets very hot during the summer season in Italy and the northern region near the Alps gets extremely cold during winter.
